What Actually Causes Bad Breath?
Almost everyone has dealt with bad breath (halitosis) at some point, and almost everyone's first instinct is the same: reach for a mint. Mints work, briefly — and that "briefly" is the clue to what's actually going on. Bad breath is a downstream symptom, not a standalone problem, and understanding its actual sources explains why some approaches last and others fade within the hour.
The Primary Cause: Oral Bacteria
The large majority of chronic bad breath originates in the mouth itself, not the stomach — a common misconception. Certain bacteria, particularly anaerobic species living on the back of the tongue, in periodontal pockets, and between teeth, break down proteins from food debris and produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) as a byproduct. Those compounds are the actual source of the odor, and they're produced continuously as long as the bacterial activity continues — which is why a temporary mint can't address the underlying production.
The Other Major Contributors
- Dry mouth (reduced saliva flow). Saliva physically washes away food particles and bacteria. Less saliva — whether from dehydration, mouth breathing, certain medications, or sleep — means more opportunity for odor-causing bacteria to build up. This is also the biological reason "morning breath" happens to nearly everyone.
- Tongue coating. The back of the tongue has a rough surface that traps bacteria and debris particularly effectively, and it's an area many people never clean.

- Diet. Foods like garlic and onion contain sulfur compounds that are absorbed into the bloodstream and eventually exhaled through the lungs — a temporary, diet-driven cause distinct from bacterial halitosis.
- Less commonly, sinus or digestive issues. A minority of chronic cases trace back to causes outside the mouth entirely, which is why breath that doesn't improve with better oral hygiene is worth mentioning to a doctor or dentist.
Why Mints and Mouthwash Only Go So Far
Breath mints and most mouthwashes work by masking odor or briefly reducing bacterial counts. Neither approach changes the underlying rate at which odor-causing bacteria are being produced. That's the practical reason the effect fades — the mechanism was never designed to last past the immediate moment. Addressing bad breath more durably generally means addressing one of the actual contributors above: improving saliva flow, cleaning the tongue, treating gum disease, or supporting a more balanced oral microbiome overall.
